Jewellery Care
General Guidelines
-
Keep it clean
Regularly wipe your jewellery with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dirt, oils, and other residues that can accumulate on the surface over time. This simple step helps maintain its shine and prevents dulling. For example, after wearing a necklace for a day, gently wipe it down before storing it. -
Store properly
Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. You can use individual jewellery boxes or soft pouches to protect each piece from scratches and tangling. For delicate items like pearl necklaces or chains with small links, it's advisable to hang them or lay them flat rather than piling them up with other pieces. -
Avoid chemicals
Remove your jewellery before swimming in chlorinated pools, using household cleaning products, or applying perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays. These chemicals can react with the metals or gemstones in your jewellery and cause discoloration, damage, or dulling. For instance, chlorine in swimming pools can tarnish silver jewellery quite quickly.
Care for Different Materials
-
Gold Jewellery
- Pure gold: Pure gold is relatively soft, so it's important to handle it with care to avoid scratches. Even though it doesn't tarnish easily, it can still accumulate dirt. You can clean it with a mild soap solution and a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
- Karat gold: Karat gold alloys (like 14K or 18K gold) may contain other metals that can cause tarnishing over time. Use a jewellery cleaner specifically formulated for gold or a mixture of mild detergent and warm water to gently clean it. Avoid using abrasive materials that could scratch the surface.
-
Silver Jewellery
Silver tarnishes when it reacts with sulfur in the air or other substances. To clean tarnished silver, you can use silver polish or make a natural cleaner by mixing baking soda with water to form a paste. Gently rub the paste onto the silver with a soft cloth, rinse, and dry. You can also store silver jewellery with anti-tarnish strips to slow down the tarnishing process. -
Gemstone Jewellery
- Diamonds: Diamonds are durable but can still get dirty and lose their sparkle. Clean them with a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid diluted in warm water. Soak the diamond jewellery for a few minutes, then gently brush it with a soft toothbrush (preferably one designated for jewellery cleaning). Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth.
- Emeralds: Emeralds are relatively soft and porous compared to some other gemstones. Avoid using harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners as they can damage the stone. Instead, clean them with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap if necessary, and dry immediately.
- Pearls: Pearls are very delicate. Wipe them gently with a soft, damp cloth after wearing to remove any body oils or dirt. Do not soak them in water for long periods or use any harsh chemicals. Store them separately from other jewellery to prevent scratches, as even a soft scratch can damage their luster.

Platinum Jewellery
Platinum is a durable metal that doesn't tarnish easily. However, it can still get dirty. Clean it with a mild jewellery cleaner or a solution of warm water and mild soap. Gently wipe it with a soft cloth or use a soft brush for intricate designs to remove any debris.
By following these jewellery care tips, you can keep your precious pieces looking beautiful and in good condition for years to come.
